Both police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have claimed credit for taking the 29-year-old into custody.

RAB-13 Dinajpur Commander Maj Abdullah Al Mahmud told bdnews24.com that they picked up Obayed from Debiganj Upazila's Sonaroy village in Panchagarh on Wednesday morning.

On the other hand, Nilphamari's Assistant Superintendent of Police Firoz Kabir claimed they detained Obayed from Domar Upazila's Sonarai Bazar in the district.

Officials in police and RAB headquarters in Dhaka have also made contradictory claims regarding the youth's detention.

Eighth-grader Risha died on Sunday at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, three days after being knifed by a youth on the foot over-bridge in front of her school at Kakrail.

The 14-year-old girl’s family said Obayed, who worked at a tailoring shop in the capital, had been ‘harassing’ Risha over phone for some months.

They suspect he stabbed the girl. The case started by the family accuses Obayed of the murder.

After failing to trace him, police detained Obayed’s sister Khadija Begum and brother-in-law Khademul Islam on Monday night from their home at Dinajpur’s Birganj Upazila for questioning.

Khadija told reporters that his brother came to visit them last Thursday and left hours later. He has been untraceable since then, she claimed.
