Kosba police OC Md Mohiuddin has identified the man as Md Rohij Uddin alias 'Rohijja', 45, of Konabarhi village. He said Rohij was accused in 13 drug-related cases.

He said four police constables were also injured in the 'shootout' that took place around Monday midnight in Gopinathpur Union's Gonabarhi area.

Mohiuddin told bdnews24.com that after arresting Rohij from Gopinathpur, police took him along on a raid at Konabarhi to stop smuggling of a consignment of banned Yaba pills.

"Rohij’s accomplices had opened fire on police officers when they reached there. Police returned fire in self-defence. Rohij was caught in the crossfire and died on the spot," the OC claimed.

The OC said the four constables were given first aid for injuries sustained during the encounter.

He added that one pipe gun, one machete, 100 bottles of liquor, 15 kgs of cannabis and 300 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
