Five students arrested at Eden Girls’ College hostel over ‘militant links’

Police have arrested and charged five students of Eden Girls’ College at a hostel for their alleged link to militancy.

A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted police three days to grill them, court police Sub-Inspector Rakibul Alam told bdnews24.com.

Lalbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman started a case against them under the Special Powers Act after detaining them on Monday night.

The arrested students have been identified as Sabiha Afrin Shima, 23, of chemistry department, Mosammat Umme Salma Euma, 23, of political science, Maksuda Khatun, 22, of social work, Nasrin Sultana, 24, of English and Fauzi Akter, 22, of Islamic studies departments.

SI Alam said they were members of Islami Chhatri Sangstha, an organisation of female Islamist students.

Quoting plaintiff Rahman, Alam said, “Jihadi books were seized from them. They were allegedly working in support of militant activities.”
