Fire service divers conducted the operation for a second day on Sunday after a huge cache of arms and ammunitions had been recovered the previous day from the canal.

“One of the divers found the carton around 11am,” said Fire Service Control Duty Officer Mahmudul Haque.

He said that it contained 32 magazines for firearms and that the search was continuing. “Six divers are still on it.”

On Saturday, seven bags loaded with arms and ammunition were found in the shallow waters of the Diabarhi canal in Sector-16 of Uttara.

The haul included 97 pistols, 462 magazines, 1,060 bullets and 10 bayonets and 104 dices for making bullets.

Police said the arms and ammunition were good enough for use.

A constable called his station for help when the activities of four to five people with a car made him suspicious.

Dhaka metro police chief Asaduzzaman Mia visited the spot on Sunday night.

“We suspect people dumped the weapons and ammunition in the canal after the recent crackdown,” said Commissioner Mia.
