Monsoon induces low in Bay of Bengal as rainy season nears

The arrival of south-western monsoon means the rainy season is drawing near. The monsoon has triggered a low in the Bay of Bengal.

The Met Office has asked the maritime ports to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 as the low is likely to create squally weather over the Bay.

Rain and thundershowers occurred at many places in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Khulna and Barisal until 6am on Friday.

The maximum rain of 253 millimetres was recorded in Teknaf, according to the Meteorological Department.

Weather experts said a deep convection is taking place over the North Bay.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

In line with the Bangla calendar, Friday is the 27th of the month of Jaishtha. The month of Asharh, the first month of rainy season ‘Barsha’, will start after four days.

Friday’s highest temperature was 36.5 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi. The mercury reached 31.5 degrees Celsius in Dhaka.

The Met Office has forecast that the temperature may remain nearly unchanged on Saturday.

Rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places in Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

Rain may also occur at a few places over Khulna, Barisal and Dhaka divisions and at one or two places in Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions.

Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions may have rain with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places.
