Superintendent Babul Aktar’s wife Mahmuda Aktar was stabbed before being shot in the head on Sunday morning.

She was on her way to drop her 6-year-old son to a bus stop for school when three men, who came on a motorcycle attacked her just a few hundred yards from her home in the port city’s OR Nizam Road.

Police claimed finding the motorcycle late on Sunday at the city’s Badurtala area, Detective Branch (DB) Assistant Commissioner Tahmina Takia told bdnews24.com.

A DB officer, asking not to be named, said that it was parked on the street.

Mahmuda’s murder was similar to the killings carried out by extremists over the past two years, police have said, basing their conclusions on witness accounts and CCTV camera footage.

Babul Aktar, as additional deputy commissioner with the DB in Chittagong, had played a key role in nabbing top militants and led raids in the past two years, busting their hideouts in the southern coastal district.

The police officer was promoted in April and transferred to Police Headquarters in Dhaka.

But his wife, son and 4-year-old daughter lived in Chittagong. Babul reported for duty in the capital last Thursday.
