At least 80 persons died in Union Parishad poll-related violence after the announcement of the six-phase election in February.

In the fifth phase on Saturday, at least 11 other persons died.

In the evening, the CEC said in a media conference, “A violent environment is prevailing in the country. So everyone will have to change their mindset so as to be prepared for democracy.”

He said deaths were reported in other incidents like dispute over control of land. “The violence in the polls has also increased. I think there is nothing to be impatient about.”

Ahmad said the candidates were treading the path of violence though they have the option to seek justice in courts.

He said the election would have been better had the security forces conducted their “anti-arms drives properly”.

He pointed out how the supporters were sacrificing their lives to “snatch victory”.

He wished it would be possible to hold elections without police some day.
