Bangladesh ports raise danger alerts as cyclone ‘Roanu’ gets closer to shores

The Met office has asked Chittagong port to hoist danger signal number 7, Cox’s Bazar 6, Payra and Mongla 5 as the cyclone ‘Roanu’ has got closer to the Bangladesh coast.

Meteorological Department Director Shamsuddin said the signals meant the ports were threatened by a storm with a wind speed of 62 to 88 kmph.
 
He said the first cyclone of this monsoon might sweep through south Bangladesh coasts. 
 
Senior Meteorologist Abdul Mannan told bdnews24.com until Friday afternoon, the cyclone was about 965 kilometres southwest of Chittagong port, 945 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 775 km southwest of Payra port and 810 km southwest of Mongla port.
 
He said the velocity of wind was 62 kmph at the centre and was increasing up to 88 kmph.
 
The Met Office has advised fishermen staying in the South Bay and deep sea to remain close to the shores and not to venture afar into the sea until further notice.
