Nurul Azim Rony, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) general secretary for the Chittagong metro unit, was held outside a polling centre in Hathazari Upazila on Saturday.

Local police OC Md Ismail said Rony has been handed over to the prison authorities on Sunday morning to serve his sentence for violating the electoral code.

“He has been also been booked under the Arms Act,” said the police officer.

Rony was arrested with a pistol, ammunition, stamps and Tk 26,000 in cash by a mobile court in front of a voting centre at the Mirzapur Union.

Locals said the Awami League chairman aspirant for the union council Nurul Absar happens to be Rony’s relative.

On the night of Thursday, an Awami League activist was shot dead in Mirzapur, when the official poll campaign period ended.
