Chittagong BCL leader arrested with firearms during UP polls

A leader of the ruling Awami League’s student front has been arrested with firearms in Chittagong during the Union Parishad polls.

Nurul Azim Rony, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) general secretary for the Chittagong metro unit, was nabbed during a raid led by a judicial magistrate outside a poll centre at Hathazari Upazila.

Altogether 703 union councils in 47 districts went to polls on Saturday in the fourth round of the six-phase polls.

Chittagong’s Superintendent of Police KM Hafiz Akter told bdnews24.com that he was handed over to the local police.

Hathazari police OC Mohammad Ismail said a pistol and 15 bullets were found with the BCL’s Chittagong city chapter leader.

“A person, identified as Nurul Azim Rony, was arrested in possession of firearm. We have heard he is involved with the Chhatra League.”
