Police said motorcycle-borne youths killed Nikhil Chandra Joarder, 50, at Kalibarhi Bazar under Tangail’s Gopalpur Upazila on Saturday noon.

Nikhil earlier served three-month in jail for slandering Prophet Muhammad (SM).

Gopalpur police OC Muhammad Abdul Jalil said, “Three youths arrived at the shop of Nikhil. They took him to a nearby road saying they need to talk to him. Then they hacked him indiscriminately and fled after confirming his death.”

A bag was found at the murder site. But it could not be known immediately what were inside it.

Police could not say who had committed the murder.

Several people including, foreign nationals, bloggers, human rights activists and university teachers were hacked to death in the last one year.

In most of the cases, al-Qaeda or Islamic State claimed responsibility.

The government, however, dismissed the claims by saying local militants were issuing statements online in the name of the two outfits.
