“I am horrified at the savage attack on Mr J Roy & Mr G C Roy. Nothing can justify attacks on people because of their faith or beliefs,” she tweeted.

“Freedom of religion is a universal right. The UK stands alongside the people of Bangladesh and against all forms of extremism,” she continued in the second tweet.

Earlier, the EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon condemned the murder of the priest, Jagneshwar Roy, at Panchagarh, and the attack on Gopal Chandra Roy, who was injured while trying to save the priest on Sunday.

Radical outfit Islamic State is said to have claimed responsibility for the murder.

Police have arrested three people over the killing.
