Two more transformers at the rental power plant at Siddhirganj were also damaged in the fire that started around 9am Friday.

Seven fire fighting units were pressed into service to put out the flames, said Fire Service (Demra Zone) official Masudur Rahman.

No casualties have been reported.

The 100MW rental plant had five transformers which cost Tk 60 million each.

“We tried to protect the two others while putting out the fire. Overheating might have caused the mishap.”

Desh Energy operation in-charge Jahirul Islam said, “A high grid voltage probably caused the fire.”

At least two of its transformers were made operational by the afternoon, he said.

Desh Energy began production and joined the national grid in Feb 17 2011, a year behind schedule, prompting Power Development Board to impose fines on it.
