EC drops 13 union councils from first phase polls

The Election Commission has dropped 13 unions councils from the first phase of the polls slated for Mar 22.

As per the election scheduled announced on Feb 11, elections to 752 union councils were supposed to be held on Mar 22, but now 739 unions are going for the elections.
 
An official said the 13 councils had been dropped from the list over issues relating to demarcation and legal tangles.
 
The unions left out of the elections are Sreeramkathi under Pirojpur’s Nazirpur, Mehendiganj Alimabad, Char Ekkaria, Lata Gobindapur and Andarmanik under Barisal, Amtali under Barguna’s Amtali, Ayubpur under Brahmanbarhia’s Bancharampur, Nanapur under Chittagong’s Fatikchharhi, Ailhas under Chuadanga’s Alamdanga, and Syedpur under Doalatkhan and Lord Hardinge under Lalmohan of Bhola.
 
The Commission announced the schedule for elections to 4,279 union councils to be held in six phases with party symbols.
 
Elections will be held in 710 unions on Mar 31 in the second phase, 711 on Apr 23 in the third phase, 728 on May 7 in the fourth phase, 714 on May 28 in the fifth and 660 on June in the sixth phases.
