Sarker, currently the vice president of the district chapter of the ruling Awami League, has blamed a ruling party man for the incident that took place on Tuesday night.

Around 9pm, some youths, carrying cricket stumps and arms, attacked Sarker’s three-storied residence in Kanaikhali, where he lives with the families of his two daughters.

“They beat up his daughter Mousumi Parvin and sons-in-law Mazharul and Ashraful, and looted jewellery,” said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Natore Sadar Police Station.

The former state minister for youth and sports was not at home at the time.

At a press conference in Natore later at night, Sarker said, “I do my political work from my house. Some people cannot accept this. The attack and looting were planned.”

He said he would file a case against Sabbir Hossain, member of the municipality unit of the Jubo League, and his associates on Wednesday.

Hossain could not be reached on his phone despite several attempts.

According to police, Hossain is the prime accused in the murder of a local Jubo League activist and is embroiled in disputes with Sarker’s sons.

“Policemen were sent to the spot after the incident. Actions will be taken against those responsible after we get formal complaints,” said Natore Superintendent Shyamol Kumar Mukherjee.
