Five killed in fire after boiler explodes at Gazipur factory

At least five people have been killed and another five injured in a fire that erupted in a furnace oil factory in Gazipur’s Pubail after a boiler exploded, says the fire service.

Md Akteruzzaman Liton, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence at Gazipur, said the explosion occurred around 4:30pm at Smart Metal and Chemical Industries Ltd in Gazipur city area.
 
He said five people died on the spot.
 
Their identy of those killed could not be ascertained immediately.
 
The injured were rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital at Gazipur and Tongi 50-Bed Hospital from where three – Abdul Quader, 45, Kamal, 49, Swadhin, 32 – were sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
 
Physicians of the Gazipur and Tongi hospitals said Quader and Kamal suffered 90 percent burns and Swadhin 85 percent.
 
Fire service official Liton said the factory extracts furnace oil from old tyres.
