Bangladesh condemns attacks on Saudi embassy in Iran

Bangladesh has condemned the recent attacks on the Saudi embassy in Tehran and its Consulate in Mashhad, and said such acts are in “clear violation” of the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.

Dhaka issued a statement on Wednesday on the issue days after Saudi Arabia severed its diplomatic relations with Iran on Sunday after angry protesters stormed its embassy in Tehran.

The protests followed the execution of prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

The foreign ministry, however, did not mention anything on Saudi’s suspension of diplomatic ties with Iran.

World leaders believe the move would only exacerbate the Middle-East crisis.

Both Saudi Arabia and Iran maintain ‘brotherly’ relations with Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh recently joined the Saudi-led military coalition against terrorism.

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is now in Riyadh as part of his planned official visit.

Bangladesh called upon the Iran authorities and urged it “to take urgent necessary measures to stop recurrence of such incidents (embassy attacks)”.

“It is the responsibility of the host government to accord necessary protection to the diplomatic and consular missions within its jurisdiction as these are inviolable under the international law,” read the statement.
