He passed away at 4:20am on Tuesday at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital.

“He was suffering from various age-related complications. He was shifted here from another hospital as his condition began to worsen,” BSMMU Pro Vice Chancellor Md Sharfuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com.

Hossain’s body was taken to the Jatiya Betar Bhaban at Dhaka’s Agargaon, where the funeral prayer was held after employees and officials of Bangladesh Betar paid their respect.

Members of the family said he would be buried near his ancestral home in Brahmanbarhia.

A group of broadcasters and employees had challenged the rule of Pakistan during the Liberation War in 1971, renaming the Chittagong radio station Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra (Independent Bangla Radio Station).

The centre played a vital role in the Liberation War, broadcasting the Proclamation of Independence and boosting the Bengalee morale during the conflict.
