Five siblings get life imprisonment for killing a farmer 16 years ago

Five siblings have been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of the murder of a farmer in Netrokona 16 years ago.

Netrokona’s Additional Sessions Judge’s Court, while pronouncing the verdict, also cleared 13 others of the charges on Tuesday.

The court slapped a Tk 20,000 fine on each of the convicts.

‘Tahmina’, ‘Dulal, ‘Haider’, Chan Mia and ‘Raihan’ of Barhaigram Upazila will have to serve two more years in jail if they fail to pay the fine.

Only Chan Mia and Raihan are in police custody while the rest are on the run.

According to case documents, the victim Akhter Ali had a land dispute with his neighbor Abdus Salam at Kalmakanda.

The convicts barged into Akhter’s house on Nov 25, 1998 and shot and hacked the farmer to death.

Police say the victim’s daughter Aruna Akter filed a case against the siblings, their father and 12 others the next day.

Police pressed charges in court against 18 persons on Apr 12, 1999.
