Review verdicts of death-row war criminals Salauddin Quader, Mujahid reach jail

The Supreme Court verdicts rejecting the last-ditch appeals of death-row war crimes convicts Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid are with the prison authorities.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sent the copies of the verdicts to Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday evening.
 
The prison officials will now read out the verdicts to the convicts and ask them if they will seek mercy from the president.
 
The government will go ahead with the executions if the convicts refuse to ask for mercy or if the president rejects their prayer.
 
Appellate Division Registrar Zakir Hossain had earlier told bdnews 24.com that the verdicts had been published and would be sent to the tribunal shortly.
 
Later, Additional Registrar Arunav Chakrabarty and some other officials took the copies of the verdicts to the tribunal at around 7:30pm.
 
The tribunal officials started for the jail at Nazim Uddin Road with the copies of the verdicts after around an hour.
 
ICT Registrar Shahidul Alam Jhinuk told bdnews24.com that the copies would also be sent to the district magistrate.

The tribunal officials handed the copies over to the jail authoritiyes at around 9pm.
 
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha headed the four-strong bench that dismissed the petitions of BNP leader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mujahid.
 
The other members of the bench were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, and Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.
 
They signed the verdicts shortly before the publication on Thursday afternoon.
 
In the review verdicts, they said they found no flaw in the appeal judgments and therefore, there was no reason to rethink the death sentences.

The Supreme Court has also sent the copies to the law and home ministries, and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
