Police detained Iqbal’s kin after the incident on Monday, but later released him.

Gulshan Police Station OC Sirajul Islam defended him on Tuesday, saying the accident occurred when he tried to save a passer-by who got in front of the car.

The teen’s father businessman HBM Jahidur Rahman was given his custody, the OC said.

“They have arranged treatment for the injured people. The car has been seized,” he said.

This photo of the firing from HBM Iqbal's procession in 2001 was published in newspapers.

HBM Iqbal, who was elected MP from the Ramna-Tejgaon seat in 1996, faced criticism over firing on a BNP procession in 2001.
Iqbal was accused in a case over the firing but the case was withdrawn as it was considered a ‘political harassment’ in 2009.
One of those injured after being hit by his nephew’s car, ‘Rafiq’, 27, was admitted at the United Hospital.
Iqbal’s nephew has no driving licence.
A Gulshan Police Station sub-inspector, requesting anonymity, told bdnews24.com: “The boy was drunk. He hit two rickshaws while driving recklessly on Gulshan’s Road-74. Two rickshaw-pullers and two others were injured at the time.”

One of them was admitted at the hospital as he was critically injured, the SI said. The others left after treatment.
Referring to the statement of Iqbal’s nephew, the police officer said he was picking a photo while driving to upload on Facebook, leading to the accident.
OC Islam said “necessary steps will be taken”, if the victims file compliant.
“But the accused gets bail in such cases even if someone dies,” he said, defending the release of the teen.
Iqbal did not take calls from bdnews24.com.
