Md Javed, 26, a textiles engineer by profession, was arrested during a search operation at a house in Khawaznagar Azimparha on Monday evening.

Nine hand grenades, 120 rounds of ammunition, a pistol, 10 knives and a large quantity of bomb-making materials were seized from them, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong police (Detective Branch) Babul Aktar told bdnews24.com.

Javed, from Chittagong’s Mirsarai, had rented the flat at Haji Nur Ahammed Tower in Karnaphuli.

Police say they raided the flat based on information divulged by two others arrested in the morning.

“Javed tried to hurl grenade at us but we apprehended him before that,” ADC Aktar said.

“We found the grenades, pistol, knives, ammunition and bomb-making material stashed in a room.”

A bomb disposal unit of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police went to the scene and two other rooms in the flat were being searched at around 10pm.

Javed rented the three-room flat on Oct 1 saying he would live there with his family but instead brought in his associates, police added.

Only Javed was arrested during Monday’s raid at the house. The others were arrested in parts of the city earlier in the day.

They are – ‘Sujon’ alias ‘Babu’, 28, of Jhenaidah, ‘Fuad’, 33, of Gobindaganj, ‘Mahbub’, 37, and ‘Kajol’, 40, of Noakhali.

Mahbub and Kajol were arrested in the morning while Babu and Fuad were arrested in Oxygen area based on information they divulged.
