Rajib Baroi was a third-year student of the university’s Pali and Buddhist Studies.

He was the library secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Jagannath Hall unit before being suspended eight months ago.

Acting Proctor Amzad Ali on Tuesday night told bdnews24.com about Rajib’s expulsion from the university.

“Police are investigating. Further actions will come based on the outcome of the probe,” he added.

Police on Monday evening arrested Rajib and a Jagannath University student, Amit Kumar Das, on charges of their involvement in the mugging of a theatre activist inside the Suhrawardy Udyan on Aug 16.

The two and their accomplices had first taken the cash, mobile phones and the debit cards from Ansar Ali Limon and his female friend.

Then the muggers threatened to rape the girl when Limon refused to divulge his debit card’s PIN code.

They let him and his friend go after two of the muggers went to the Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited ATM booth at the TSC on the university campus and withdrew Tk 50,000.
