Electricity supply to the division’s southern region, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban had been suspended after the fire broke out on Sunday afternoon, a Power Development Board (PDB) official said.

The plant’s Manager Bhuban Bijoy Dutta said a 132 KV transformer had caught fire around 3:30pm.

The flames had soon spread to another nearby transformer, he told bdnews24.com.

Agrabad Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Jasim Udin said eight fire-fighting units doused the fire around 5:30pm.

Chittagong PDB Chief Engineer (Distribution-South zone) Ajharul Islam told bdnews24.com sparks from a wire that had snapped during a heavy rain had ignited the fire.

“One transformer has been completely damaged while another suffered a minor damage.”

The fire, however, had not affected the power supply to the port city, he added.
