Magura infant who was took bullet in mother’s womb is named Suraiya

The infant who suffered with bullet wounds when she was in her mother’s womb has been named 12 days after her birth.

Her father Bachchu Bhuiyin told bdnews24.comat the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Tuesday she was named as ‘Suraiya’. Her elder sister’s name is ‘Sumaiya’.

“We chose the name when Najma (the mother) was brought to the hospital last Thursday. I told people about it today (Tuesday),” he said.

He said both Najma Begum and Suraiya were in good condition.

Bachchu said Health Minister Mohammed Nasim visited the mother and the baby earlier in the day and gave Tk 40,000.   

Nasim said the government will foot the bill of their treatment.

Followers of Bachchu’s brother, former Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Kamrul Bhuyian and former Juba League member Muhammad Ali and ‘Azibar’ clashed at Doarparha on July 23 for control of the locality.

Chhatra League is the student affiliate of ruling Awami League and Juba League its youth front.

Kamrul’s uncle Abdul Momin Bhuyian was shot dead. Najma, Suraiya, and neighbour Miraz Hossain received bullet injuries.

Doctors in Magura operated on the mother to save the child. The baby was sent to DMCH after two days.

Deceased Momin’s son Rubel Bhuyian filed a case against 16 on July 26.

Police arrested six, including prime accused BCL’s Magura unit Vice-President Sen Suman.

Bachchu’s younger brother Rezwan Bhuyian told bdnews24.com Azibar shot Najma.

Health Minister Nasim told reporters at the DMCH no one linked to the incident would be spared.

“Even the prime minister has given instruction,” he said.
