Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahmat Ullah confirmed the action against Inspector (Investigations) Alamgir Hossain on Monday.

Locals have been alleging that police did not want to start the case over the murder and were helping the accused flee. One of the accused, Kamrul Islam, made it as far as Saudi Arabia.

After the video of the torture went viral in the social media, it caused uproar and those accused in the case over the killing were detained by locals and turned over to police.

The list includes Islam, who was held by expatriates in Jeddah and handed over to the Bangladesh embassy. He will be sent back to stand trial.

A police committee was formed on July 14 to investigate the allegations against the police officers. Committee chief, SMP Additional Commissioner Rokan Uddin, submitted the report to Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan nine days later.

Hossain was withdrawn from Jalalabad Police Station on Friday after initial findings suggested his involvement. SI Zakir Hossain and Aminul Islam were also temporarily suspended.

Sylhet police requested the headquarters to temporarily suspend him. His suspension order reached Sylhet on Monday along with instructions to transfer him to Rangpur Range.

Rajan’s father accused the trio of helping Muhit Alam and his brother Islam to flee, neglecting their duties and behaving badly with him when he approached them to lodge a murder case.

Five including Muhit and Islam were accused in the case.

A total of 13 have been arrested for involvement in the killing and seven of them have reportedly confessed in court.
