Two people were rescued after the landslide at a hill at South Baharchharha area around 2am, authorities said.

Cox’s Bazar Fire Service Operation Officer Abdul Majid said that huge chunks of earth buried four houses at the bottom of the hill.

The dead have been identified as Junu Begum, 28 and her seven-year-old daughter Neeha Moni, 45-year-old Shah Alam, his wife Rokeya Akter and their nine-year-old daughter Reena Akter.

The two who survived are Shah Alam, 28 and Nurun Nabi, 22. They have been taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Nabi was rescued two hours after the landslide while the bodies of Rokeya Akter and Reena Akter were recovered on Monday afternoon.

The town’s fire service unit rushed to the spot immediately and was later joined by two other units from Pekua and Chakoria Upazilas.

The army joined the rescue effort soon after the incident.

“The houses are buried under at least 10 to 12 feet of earth,” fire service official Majid told bdnews24.com.

Survivor Nabi told bdnews24.com  that the hill caved in around 2am and came down on his house.

“I was rescued by neighbours.”
