The Awami League leader won the Apr 29 city polls but was unable to assume office because the previous mayor’s term ended only on Saturday.

Nasir, general secretary of the party’s Chittagong metropolitan unit, took charge on Sunday from acting mayor Mohammad Hossain at the Chittagong City Corporation.

In line with the tradition, former mayors Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and M Manjur Alam were invited to attend the ceremony, but none of them showed up.

The only Awami League leader present was the Awami League’s metropolitan unit advisor Ishaq Mia.
Nasir had taken oath on May 6 along with the mayors of Dhaka North and South city corporations, but had to wait until July 25 as the term of the previous mayor and councillors ended that day.
The councillors, elected through the Apr 29 polls, also took charge on Sunday.
