Mymensingh Zakat stampede kills at least 13

At least 13 people have been killed as an early morning event of Zakat clothes distribution triggered a deadly stampede in a Mymensingh town factory, police officials said.

They said the 5am event at a chewing tobacco factory saw a huge number of dole seekers run towards the gate “as soon as it was opened”.
 
Police detained seven including Shamim Talukder, the owner of Nurani Jorda factory at the town’s Atul Chakravorty Road, after the incident, local police station OC told bdnews24.com.

Quamrul Islam, the OC, said the 13 bodies had been taken to the Mymensingh Medical College hospital morgue and that he suspected some had been taken away by relatives.
“The death toll will rise in all likelihood,” the OC said and added over 50 were injured.
