Mirpur's police station SI Abdus Salam said Reshma's throat was slit and her body left in the first floor apartment of a five-storey building at Rainkhola, where Reshma stayed with her parents.

She was a student of the BCIC college run by the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation.

"The girl's throat was slit, there's deep gash in her neck," said Mirpur model police station OC Mohammed Salahuddin.

Reshma's father Mohammed Alamgir is a class-IV employee at BCIC Bhavan in Motijheel.

Her mother Mariam Begum told the police and journalists that she left Reshma and her father in the apartment and left for Hajipara on Thursday morning.

Later Alamgir left for his office.

Mariam returned home an hour later  to find her daughter in a pool of blood, lifeless and slashed at the neck.

A sharp cutter using for slicing vegetables and fish was found beside her dead body.

Mariam told police the house had been robbed and some money was missing from her vault.

Alamgir rushed back from office around 2.30am on hearing of the murder.

"I left the apartment locked from outside because I and my wife have the keys. Reshma was alone in the house," Alamgir said.

Construction work has been taking place on the top floor of the building where the family stayed.

Alamgir has been living in the first floor apartment since last February, said Mohammed Masud, a resident of the apartment .

The dead body has been sent for autopsy at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, said OC Salahuddin.
