Sub-Inspector sent to jail on charges of torturing wife for more dowry

A police officer in Narsinghdi has been sent to prison for allegedly torturing his wife for more dowry.

Sub-Inspector Sakhawat Hossain Shohag of Palash Police Station surrendered at Dhaka-1 Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Thursday.

His bail plea was rejected by Judge Hosne Ara. 

His wife, who lives in Ashulia, filed the case on Feb 10, her lawyer Bakir Hossain told bdnews24.com.

The policeman’s brother Sakhawat Hossain Milon and his wife are accused in the case along with his brother-in-law.
SI Sohagh demanded dowry saying he paid more than Tk 1.5 million in bribe for getting the police job after his marriage on Jun 26 last year, according to case details.      
He was given Tk 1 million on Oct 10.
“But the accused beat her after gagging her mouth with a handkerchief for the delay in paying the rest. 
“At one point, he took help from others and scorched both her feet with burning firewood,” the case reads.
