The male elephant from Gopalganj’s Gunpara crossed the River Madhumati and entered Mollahat around 5am on Saturday.

Mollahat Police Station OC ANM Khairul said the elephant went on the rampage killing three villagers and smashing seven houses.

Those killed were identified as Monwara Begum of Garfa village, Kusum Biswas of Kahalpur village and Mizanur Rahman Fakir of Basabari village.

Later the mahout of the elephant Mohammad Faruk calmed it down.

Faruk said  one Matiar Rahman of Srimangal owns the elephant and its female companion.

He used to rent the elephants to circus groups.

The female elephant had been in a circus in Gopalganj.

The male one was brought to the female elephant for mating.

The female elephant was taken to Dhaka later.

The enraged male elephant broke its shackles when it was tied beside a street at Gunpara.

The mahout said its female companion was being brought from Dhaka to calm it down.
