Officials at the Hathazari 132 kV Grid Sub-Station said the fire started around 8pm on Monday.

Chief Engineer of Power Development Board Nazrul Islam could only confirm that the power supply to the grid was cut around 8:20pm leading to blackout across the whole district.

He could not provide details about the fire at the sub-station, which is supervised by the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCD).

However, power supply from the station resumed around 9:20pm following repairs.

Electricity began returning to different parts of the port city after that, residents said.

PGCD Supervising Engineer Prabir Kumar Das also told bdnews24.com that power channel tripped after the fire destroyed the transformer.

He, however, could not confirm how the transformer caught fire.

Das said repairs, started immediately after the fire was doused, were still on.
