The decision to set up the centre was taken in a meeting of the National Disaster Management Council on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting.

Her Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury said the centre will be set up in a building that can tolerate quakes.

It would be on the highway near the airport so that important persons can reach it quickly, he said.

The operations during and after a disaster will be conducted, coordinated and observed from the centre, he said.

The prime minister’s press secretary also said the centre will have a website and mobile-phone application to widen the opportunity for people to communicate with the centre during or after a disaster.

The decision to set up the centre followed a devastating earthquake in Nepal which also shook Bangladesh. Thousands died in Nepal while some buildings developed cracks in Bangladesh.

Experts fear that 72,000 buildings in capital Dhaka will collapse if an earthquake with a magnitude of over 7 on the Richter Scale hits the country.
