The brothers also injured four others at Raghunathpur village on Friday.

Later, agitated locals burnt the house of the killer brothers.

Benapole Land Port Police Station OC Apurba Hasan said the incident took place at Dabarhi Ground area in the morning.

The deceased are ‘Abdullah’, 48, and Shamsur Rahman Budo. Abdullah is a former member of the local Union Parishad.

Injured ‘Sumon’, 23, Azgar Ali, 36, and ‘Abdullah’, 35, have been admitted to Jessore Medical College and Hospital while Hafizur Rahman, 35, is undergoing treatment at Sharsha Upazila Health Centre.

Killer brothers Nashir Uddin Nashu, ‘Alauddin’ and ‘Fulsoddin’ fled the area after the incident, OC Hasan said.

Quoting locals, Hasan said some Acacia trees, planted along Raghunathpur-Sadipur road, were uprooted by a storm on Thursday night.

Nashu, Alauddin and Fulsoddin, sons of Abdur Rahman Mollick, went to cut the trees and take them away in the morning.

When Abdullah forbade them to cut the government trees, they had an altercation with him.

At one stage, they hacked him with axes and choppers.

When the others tried to stop the three brothers, they attacked them too and fled the area.

Agitated over the incident, locals vandalised the house of the three brothers and set it on fire.

No one was injured in this incident, the OC said.

Additional police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incident, he added.
