Wazir Sattar, Toufique Imrose Khalidi to lead EDAS again

Wazir Sattar and Toufique Imrose Khalidi have been elected to lead the English Department Alumni Society (EDAS) for another year.

The new committee was announced on Friday during the society's annual reunion on the Dhaka University campus.

The Department of English was opened at the university's inception in 1921 but the alumni society was established four decades later in 1986.

Its members, from as far back as the late '50s to the recent graduates, met at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on Friday like previous years.

They observed a minute's silence in memory of eminent author and educationist Prof Zillur Rahman Siddiqui who died in November last year.

Department's Chair Prof Tahmina Ahmed made the opening remarks.

EDAS General Secretary Khalidi presented the annual report. President Sattar, too, spoke on the occasion.

Prof Fakhrul Alam, election commissioner of the EDAS, announced the new committee at the end of the programme.

Communication specialist Sattar, who graduated in 1973, was named president.

bdnews24.com Editor-in-Chief Khalidi became the society's general secretary for the fourth time.

Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, businessman Ishtiaq Majid and recently retired inspector general of police Hassan Mahmood Khandker were named vice presidents.

Businessman Dewan Shahryar Hossain and RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed are the joint secretaries general.

English Department's Prof Dr Rubina Khan, who will take over as department's chairperson next month, has been named the treasurer by virtue of her position.

Other 17 elected members are -- former North South University registrar Zafrul Karim, commerce ministry's Senior Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon, education ministry's Joint Secretary Aminul Islam Khan, sports personality Shameem Al-Mamun, university teachers ATM Sajedul Huq, Prof Farjana Islam, Associate Prof Abdur Razzaque Miah, additional tax commissioners M Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, and Md Abdus Samad Al Azad, woman entrepreneur and businessperson Sabera Ahmed Koli, Assistant Inspector General of Police Mahfuzur Rahman, businessman Syed Sadaquat Hossain, Dhaka University teacher Neelima Akhter, civil servant Mohammad Anowar Hossain, police officer Md Shahabuddin Kabir, Jagannath University teacher Shehreen Ataur Khan and Akib Javed.
