Fatulla Police Station’s OC Mohammad Asaduzzaman said the incident occurred in Abul Kalam’s room at ‘Rahman Manjil’ near the railway station around 7:30 am on Tuesday.

The victims, Abul Kalam and his wife ‘Liza’, have been taken to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Police could not identify the cause of the explosion. OC Asaduzzaman said the place had been inspected and termed the occurrence a ‘mysterious’ incident.

Injured Abul Kalam and ‘Liza’ had rushed out after the explosion and boarded a rickshaw, according to the neighbours. They were carrying a ‘tiffin carrier’ and some money.

Dhaka Medical Police Outpost’s SI Mohammad Rustom said a couple from Narayanganj had been admitted to the hospital. “When asked about the reason of their injury their statements didn’t match. It’s mysterious,” he said.

Locals said a loud explosion was heard from Kalam’s room in the morning. As a result, the walls collapsed and the doors and furniture were blown off.

Both Kalam and ‘Liza’ are Barisal residents.
