Police said Jamshed Ali, 40, son of Montaj Ali of Shibnarayan village under Shibganj, was shot on Monday afternoon during the clash at the Gopalnagar intersection.

He succumbed to injuries at around 6:30pm at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Police said at least nine others, including a police personnel and Border Guard Bangladesh were injured in the clash.

The BNP claimed Ali was its activist and called a daylong shutdown for Tuesday in Chapainawabganj district in protest against the killing.

District unit president of the party Shahjahan Mia said the strike would be observed from 6am to 6pm.

Shibganj Police Station OC Moynul Islam said leaders and activists of the 20-Party Alliance tried to take out a procession from the Gopalganj intersection at around 3pm by ignoring the Section 144 in force, prohibiting mass gathering.

“They hurled stones and crude bombs on the police,” he said.

Police and witnesses said the clash began when members of the law enforcement agencies lobbed teargas shells and opened fire on the agitators to disperse them.

Later, police and RAB reinforcements were rushed to the place to bring the situation under control.

Police said 10 people were injured in the clash and three of them admitted to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Jamshed Ali died at the hospital.

OC Moynul Islam said the local administration imposed the ban on assembly of people from 2pm to 8pm in the area to maintain law and order.
