Now around 130 million senior citizens will be entitled to special facilities including health, residence and transport at lower costs and on a priority basis.

Speaking at a function in the capital on Thursday, the president said: "I am declaring all the older persons of the country as Senior Citizens through this programme so that they can get the due respect in society and in the state."

"I hope that everyday will be celebrated as Parents Day in every family, unlike the Western countries that have fixed dates for Father’s Day and Mother’s Day," he said.

The government on Nov 17, 2013 approved the draft of the National Policy on Older Persons determining the age of older people at 60 years.
