Hosne Ara, 65, was found with a ‘gamcha’ tied around her neck and an old ‘Lungi’ around her feet in her home at Mirpur-2.
The murder took place sometime during Monday evening, said Mirpur Police SI Imanul Hossain.
“We believe she has choked to death.”
Her eldest son ‘Delwar’ discovered her body around 10pm when he broke in to the house after finding it locked from outside.
He broke down after seeing the body while neighbours called the police.
Delwar told police Tk 200,000 was missing from his closet and the whole house has been turned upside down.
He runs a workshop at Mirpur’s Gudaraghat, where his two younger brothers ‘Panna’ and ‘Liton’ also worked.
The family hails from Barisal’s Bakerganj. Hosne Ara’s husband Fazlur Rahman passed away a long time ago and she was living with Delwar in his house.
Delwar said his mother was alone in the house as his wife went to her parents’ home six days ago.
The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
