USAID Bangladesh said Aarnes would visit development projects in Khulna, Jessore, Baagerhaat and Munshiganj during her four-day stay.
Aarnes is in charge of USAID’s development programs across Asia, except Afghanistan and Pakistan, comprising more than 20 countries and reaching more than half of the world’s population.
Before taking up her current assignment, Aarnes served as USAID Mission Director in Pakistan and Jordan, and USAID Deputy Mission Director in Egypt and Bangladesh.
In Washington DC, she was posted as USAID’s Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Middle East.
The US government, through the USAID, has provided over $6 billion in development assistance to Bangladesh since 1971.
The amount was nearly $200 million in 2014.
Its Bangladesh programmes include promotion of democratic institutions and practices, increasing food security and economic opportunities, improving health and education services, and increasing resiliency to climate change through adaptation and low-carbon development.
