Sainik League leader killed, 5 arrested

Police have arrested five people for their suspected links to the murder of an Awami League affiliate leader in Bogra.

Bogra district Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan said detectives arrested the five from a clinic on Sherpur Road around 8pm on Friday.

Shimul Haque Rehan, 40, district unit Convenor of Bangabandhu Sainik League was killed in an attack around 6:15pm amid squabbling over formation of the committee.
The arrestees are Sainik League Bogra district unit’s former joint convenor Sabuj Hawlader, 19, and former members ‘Sohan’, 16, ‘Rahat’, 18, ‘Bipul’, 20, and ‘Delal’, 19
Bogra Sadar Police Station OC Faizur Rahman said a group of miscreants stabbed Rehan when they attacked the Awami League office.
Doctors announced his death after he was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital.
Two rival groups of Sainik League leaders and activists have been flexing muscles in front of the Awami League office since the formation of the new committee.
Several leaders seeking anonymity said that Asaduzzaman Khan Sumon was the convenor of the district committee, which was dissolved two months ago and reconstituted with Rehan as the new convenor.
They said assuming as the district committee convenor, Rehan dissolved the committees in Bogra Sadar, Kahalu, Nandigram and Gabtoli Upazilas, antagonising those in the committees.
