Vice-Chancellor Mohd Rafiqul Islam Beg announced the shutdown decision made by the academic council in an emergency meeting on Thursday evening.

He said the students had been asked to vacate the residential halls within 10am on Friday.

Beg told bdnews24.com: “The university was scheduled to remain shut from Oct 1 to 13 on account of Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha.

“But the institution has been closed from Sept 20, 10 days earlier than the schedule, due to tension on the campus on Thursday.”

The clashes ensued after police detained the pro-Jamaat-e-Islami student front’s university unit General Secretary Ahmed Yasir and Organising Secretary Harun-ur Rashid around 11:30am when the Shibir activists tried to foil a seminar at RUET.

Police arrested 11 Shibir members during the clash.

At around 5pm, Shibir activists tried to enter Shaheed Lieutenant Selim Hall and exploded crude bombs.

The Shibir men clashed with police again later on.
