After MV Hajera-1 was found, ship movement on the channel resumed from 6pm, Mongla Port Authority Chairman Commodore Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan said.

He said the channel's spot where the vessel had sunken was cordoned off with buoys and red flags around 5pm after the Navy helped finding it.

It was now safe to use the channel, he added.

Bhuiyan said they had contacted MV Hajera-1 owners to salvage it as soon as possible and added that the port authorities will assist in the operation.

Earlier around 10am, the vessel carrying clinkers for a cement factory was on way to Khulna when it sank in the channel's Harbaria's buoy No. 2 area.

It rammed into a ship bearing Panama's flag, Mongla Port Harbour Master Khan Mohammad Aktaruzzaman told bdnews24.com.

The channel was declared out of bounds for traffic immediately after the accident.

Eight crew of the sunken vessel, however, swam to the shore.
