Upazila chairman ordered to surrender over Ramu attack

The apex court has ordered a Upazila chairman, prime accused in a case for attack on Buddhist temples and households at Ramu in Cox’s Bazar, to surrender before it within four weeks.

A bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain issued the order on Monday on an appeal by the prosecution against a High Court order.

The HC in its order granted bail to Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari Upazila Chairman Tofail Ahmed.

Miscreants vandalised and set ablaze temples and houses belonging to Buddhist community on the night of Sept 29, 2012 following a controversial Facebook post.

Seven temples, 30 houses and shops were set on fire in the mayhem. Hundreds of houses and shops were also vandalised and looted.

Locals said that Tofail led the attacks and he was arrested on Nov 28 last year.

Later he secured bail from the High Court.
