Scientist Wazed Miah remembered

Eminent nuclear scientist and husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Dr Wazed Miah has been remembered through prayers and programmes on his fifth death anniversary.

He died in the capital's Square Hospital on this day (May 9) in 2009.

Special prayers will be held after the Asr prayers at his home, Sudha Sadan on Dhanmondi 5, to mark the day. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other family members will be present.

To commemorate the day, Dr MA Wazed Miah Memorial Foundation organised a discussion at the Public Library at 10:30am.

On Thursday, National Integrated Development Foundation held a discussion and special prayers at the Shilpakala Academy and the Atomic Energy Commission held a discussion and special prayers at its auditorium.
Special prayers will also be held in Fatepur village in Rangpur where the scientist was born.
Wazed Miah was born on February 16, 1942 in Rangpur.
A theoretical physicist, Dr Miah obtained Ph. D degree from Durham University in UK. He married Sheikh Hasina on November 17, 1967.
He is survived by Hasina, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Hossain Putul.
He lived a quiet life after retirement at Sudha Sadan. He was also known among relatives and friends as 'Sudha Miah'.
In his early life he joined the Atomic Energy Commission as a physicist and went on to become its chairman.
