The bench of Justices Mirza Hossain Haider and Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar issued a rule on Wednesday asking why it should not order private and government medical institutes across the country to diagnose and treat the underprivileged free of cost.

The rule comes following a writ petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer JR Khan on Mar 19.

The court also asked why clinics, private hospitals, nursing homes and diagnostic centres should not be directed to implement the ‘Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Laboratories Regulation Ordinance’.
In a separate ruling, the bench sought to know why it should not order closure of all unapproved medical institutes.
The court also asked why it should not order the formation of a high-powered cell to supervise all government and private hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and diagnostic centres.
The secretaries for the ministries of health, law, home along with the chief of the Directorate General of Health Services and Bangladesh Private Clinics and Diagnostic owners association must reply to the rule within four weeks.
