District and Sessions Judge SM Sulaiman gave the verdict on Thursday noon.

The convicts - Md Julfikar Ali aka Julfu and ‘Oli’ aka ‘Raju’ aka ‘Ratan’ are however absconding. They both hail from Mongla.

The murdered fishermen, Anwar and Harun Howlader, were brothers, said prosecutor Mohammad Ali.

They were among the 10 to 12 fishermen who rented nine boats to fish in Shela river at the Sundarbans on Oct 11, 2004.
Boat owner Abdul Malek found that two of the boats with Anwar and Harun were missing after he went to the river on Oct 17.
Six days later, Anwar’s body was found at a Char of the Shela river. Harun’s body was never recovered, said the court’s prosecutor.
Their brother Badsha Howlader filed a case with the police without naming any accused.
Mongla Police SI Md Abul Hossain investigated the case. Hossain in his report, submitted in December, 2005, said the bandits ‘Julfu’ and ‘Ratan’ shot the brothers dead while they were fishing.
