Kabirhat Police Station OC SM Mahbubur Rahman said police had to open fire to disperse the attackers. Some including three constables were injured.

According to him, Kabirhat Upazila Awami League general secretary Jahirul Haque Raihan came in to the station around 11:45pm while he was ‘drunk’ and misbehaved with the police.

“At one stage, he informed people over mobile phone that he has been detained at the police station. Later, his supporters attacked the police station,” said OC Rahman adding: “There were activists of Juba League and Chhatra League among the attackers.”

Juba League and Chhatra League are the youth and student affiliates of the ruling Awami League.

Constables Md Yaseen, Abdul Kaiyum and Babul Miah were injured in the attack and are being treated at the Police Hospital in Noakhali, he said.

AL leader Raihan, who is also the mayor of Kabirhat municipalty, told bdnews24.com that the police had raided the house of local Chhatra League president Moslehuddin Nabi and detained his brothers Saiful and Bakhtiyar when they could not find him.
“I went to the police station to inquire about the arrests. Meanwhile, the word spread that I have been detained and that upset locals. At least, 10 members of Juba League and Chhatra League were injured when the police opened fire,” he said.
Noakhali’s Superintendent of Police Ashraf Uz Zaman went to Kabirhat Police Station but he has declined to comment on the matter.
