Women’s rights activist Taslima Akhter won the third prize (singles) in the spot news category of the contest.

Another photo journalist Rahul Talukder won the third prize (stories) in the spot news category.

Both of them won the prizes for pictures of the Rana Plaza collapse on April 24 last year.

More than 1100 people died and thousands of people were injured in the collapse of the eight-storey building located next to the Savar Bus Stand.

The 19-member International Jury announced the World Press Photo-2014 at Amsterdam, Netherlands on Friday.

A teacher of School of photography Pathsala, Taslima’s award winning picture was titled ‘Final Embrace’. It was also selected as one of TIME Magazine’s 10 top photos in 2013.

The picture shows a woman and man trapped in the rubble embracing each other.

President of Biplabi Nari Sanghati, Taslima is also member of leftist outfit Gana Sanghati Andolan.

The title of Rahul Talukder’s photo is ‘Collapse of Rana Plaza’.

He works as a photojournalist at an online newspaper Bangladesh Sangbad-1971.

Each year the World Press Photo prizes in nine theme categories are given to 53 photographers of 25 countries.

Founded in 1955 at Amsterdam, this organisation gives awards for the contributions to photography and visual media.

US photojournalist John Stanmeyer won the first prize in the World Press Photo of 2013.

The image shows African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night, raising their phones in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia—a tenuous link to relatives abroad.

Djibouti is a common stop-off point for migrants in transit from such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East.
